And the Oscar goes to...

Who cares?

Another Oscar season is in the history books, and people are saying (surprise, surprise) it was dull. Well, duh!

How exciting is it EVER? If you are not nominated for an award, winning an award, presenting an award, or attending the star-studded after-parties, is it ever really that exciting? Really?

And people are saying now—everywhere—that the hosts bombed. It seems to me that people say that every year. But how can Oscar hosts bomb? Their mission: act silly; have fun—or look as if you are; deliver someone’s corny, pre-written, mostly inoffensive jokes; and most importantly, introduce people so they can…introduce…other…people. Oh yeah, so we can all find out who won. Scintillating stuff. In the end, the people were introduced, the awards were awarded, so I say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

And for the people who had serious gripes about it not being exciting, I repeat: when is it ever exciting? Informative. Summative. Voyeuristic. But exciting? I think not.

What the show is is something better than simply reading a list of winners. Maybe. I mean, imagine the Academy Awards being given in town crier format. Hmmm…

Hear ye! Hear ye! The following people are this years Oscar winners…

Or in a press conference:

Academy of MPAS Official: Yes I’ll take your question.

Reporter: Who is the winner for Best Actor this year?

Official: Colin Firth for The King’s Speech. Next question.

Either would surely be quick and to the point. No muss, no fuss, no complaining about the hosts. Get your info and move on.

Ok, I’m kidding. But you have to admit that all the pre-event hooplah and post-event hooplah is designed to PUMP some excitement into this yawn-if-you’re-not-directly-involved EVENT. I mean, there is more time spent on and stir created around the dresses people wear TO the event than the event itself. It’s days after the Oscars as I write this, and people are still talking about and critiquing those dresses! ON TV! Is anyone still talking about who won the award? Anyone remember?
