I HAVE VOTED =)


I remember when I turned 18...I couldn't wait to vote. I was so excited that I got to have a say in elections. I voted in every election that came up (except the primary that I forgot about because I was having finals at UCLA, oh well...)--and was happy about it. I guess I was not a typical young person--or a typical person, period, if I really think about it. Anyway, today is election day (Midterm Midtacular for John Stewart and Stephen Colbert =)), and I have to admit that I was SERIOUSLY considering NOT voting. I have a general unease about the state of government and politics in America, and I was starting to feel like maybe it WAS unimportant that I get myself out to the poles...

Well, I left for work this morning without the information on my polling place, etc. I knew I had a meeting after work and an appointment after that. I was thinking again of giving up, but when I got to work, I discovered that our school library was a polling place! In an inspired moment, I got in there and got a special ballot (provisional) for voting in a polling place that was not my own. Then, oddly enough, I started to worry that my vote would not be counted properly! I asked a bunch of questions about it, and then, reluctantly filled out the ballot envelope.

So I guess, the sad thing is that had a polling place not been conveniently located right in front of my face, I might have skipped putting in my two cents on who should be running my state and where my tax money should go, but the great thing is that, as it turned out, I DID feel that my vote was important afterall! And I felt proud that I exercised my rights (and my voice) and voted.

Interesting take..I still think people are lazy and thats why they dont vote. On the other hand Hugh and I didnt have our ballots, but we went to where we voted last time and we were on the list. No ID no nothing, just our address and name...I could be anyone voting. It is kind of crazy that you dont have to show ID. Anyway, my next thought was that I am okay with people not voting...if they are idiots and dont understand the system or who or what is on the ballot then stay out. Just remember that when you see people in a march protesting something the governemnt did/does, ask yourself..How many of those people have voted or better yet even read the laws that are prtesting against. Ibet you will come up with a very low number.

AHHHH..life in America, think to yourself...if you were not born here, would you have scaled a 122 foot wall to get in...just a thought....

I might have scaled a wall...or taken a long boat ride, as so many others did. Hey, maybe some of my ancestors took a long boat ride...but there weren't exactly clamoring (SP?) to get on the boat, were they? Maybe my European ancestors were, but NOT the ones from further south. Well, I am glad they survived it; it worked out well for me.

Kings Win!

Nancy and I are the go-ers in our group. We are always getting tickets for something. A plane, a show...in this case, it was to see the Kings play hockey. It was my first hockey game, and I wasn't really sure if I would like it, but...I DID! We got some excellent seats and actually got really involved in the action. It still amazes me that they convert this space for so many different occasions (I, personally, have seen basketball, tennis, and now hockey here) and I couldn't help but wonder about the person whose job or career it is to design and oversee these spaces and transformations. It's pretty fascinating stuff. Final Score! It was great that the home team won!

The tour that almost wasn't

I was very excited about joining the LA Conservancy. I had been thinking about doing some walking tours with them for a long time. I looked them up again with an idea of taking some of my students (who NEVER leave the Valley--and never get field trips) on a tour, and I was surprised that the cost for basic membership was so low. I joined right away and immediately signed up for my first walking tour--Art Deco. But the night before the tour, as I feel asleep to the sound of rain, I thought, "Hmmm..." When I woke up the next morning to the sound of rain that hadn't paused in the night, I thought, "Really??" A period of hesitation, but then, "YES!" I was wide awake and I already had a ticket. What's a little rain to an adventure girl like me? My friend, Mitch, had just gifted me with a great umbrella the day before, so I was all set. Off I went to to the Red Line park and ride station at Universal and hopped a train downtown to Pershing Square...
